Leona LaMarche was a French girl growing up in Chicago in the early part of the 20th century. As a young woman she enjoyed music, dancing the Charleston, and handicrafts such as sewing and knitting.
During the Great Depression, Leona was married and raising a young family. Her handiwork skills were essential to survival, whether it was sewing clothes for the children or knitting warm sweaters for the family. Her industrious nature and beautiful creations always drew praise.
Christmas presents were crafted throughout her life. Neighbors and friends looked forward to tins filled with cookies, grandchildren got handmade ornaments every year, and everyone in the family had at least one crocheted afghan.
Leona passed on her love of crafts and handmade goods to her daughter and granddaughter. When I was young learning embroidery, my grandmother always told me that the back should look as good as the front. Quality and functionality were always the highest priority.
Now in the 21st century products are mass produced, low quality, and tossed aside for the newest gadget. Jillian LaMarche goods embody timeless elegance and are for those who value the artistry and expertise of individually created pieces.
Well into her 80’s Leona continued to craft, bake…and dance the Charleston. To honor my grandmother, I’ve used her name as part of my company identity. The tradition of quality, timeless beauty, and handmade goods are living on through me.
